Iran was held to a 1-1 draw in a Group G FIFA World Cup 2026 encounter at the Seattle Stadium on Friday.
The result pushed Iran into third in the table, leaving it sixth in the best third-ranked teams ranking. Iran will now have to await the results in Groups J, K and L before it can secure its place in the knockouts.
Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber struck in the fifth minute before Ramin Rezaeian in the 14th minute.
In between the goal, Iran was awarded a penalty but Mahedi Taremi’s effort was saved by Mostafa Shobeir.
Deep in second half stoppage time, Iran thought it had clinched a knockout berth when Shojae Khalilzadeh slammed home the winner from close range, but a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check overruled the goal. Khalilzadeh was found to be marginally offside.
