The players held a minute’s silence before kick-off during Portugal’s final group-stage match against Colombia in Miami.

The other Group K game between DR Congo and Uzbekistan as well as the two earlier encounters in Group L also had a moment’s silence before the start of play. The remaining two games through Saturday are also expected to follow the same protocol.

The gesture was to pay respects to the people who lost their lives during the recent earthquake in the South American country Venezuela.

Two severe earthquakes, more than 7.1 in magnitude on the richter scale, struck the country earlier this week. The death toll till Friday was reported at 920, with more than 3,000 people reported injured.
