Confusion regarding participation remained the centerpiece as Vinesh Phogat arrived at the Indira Gandhi Stadium complex for selection trials of Asian Games 2026 here on Saturday.
Phogat, who was allowed to compete in the trials following a Supreme Court order, arrived at the venue on Saturday morning.
However, she was informed through a circular that she did not have clearance from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to participate in the 53kg category — where she usually competes in — at the trials.
“Since Ms. Vinesh Phogat represented India in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Kyrgyzstan, and the 4th Ranking Tournament in Hungary in the 50 kg weight category as an iconic player, and as she has not participated in any UWW event after the 2024 Olympic Games, the WFI has accordingly permitted her to participate in the selection trial in the 50 kg weight category,” the circular read.
After waiting for an hour though, the two-time Asian Games medallist was allowed to give weight in 53kg.
With early confusion on the day of the trials, it remains to be seen in which category Phogat will actually take part.
