Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa on Sunday announced a 26-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde is the star name in the roster, with Al Hilal striker Darwin Nunez, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo and Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte among the other prominent names.
Two-time champion Uruguay is in Group H, along with Spain, Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia. The South American side will begin its campaign on June 16, when it takes on Saudi Arabia
Goalkeepers: Sergio Rochet, Fernando Muslera and Santiago Mele.
Defenders: Guillermo Varela, Ronald Araújo, José María Giménez, Santiago Bueno, Sebastián Cáceres, Mathías Olivera, Joaquín Piquerez, Matías Viña.
Midfielders: Manuel Ugarte, Emiliano Martínez, Rodrigo Bentancur, Federico Valverde, Agustín Canobbio, Juan Manuel Sanabria, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Nicolás de la Cruz, Rodrigo Zalazar, Facundo Pellistri, Maximiliano Araújo, Brian Rodríguez.
Forwards: Rodrigo Aguirre, Federico Viñas and Darwin Núñez.
Bielsa didn’t offer a call-up to veteran striker Luis Suarez, who had recently expressed his willingness to come out of retirement.
“You start thinking about it today, turning it over in your mind, and with the World Cup near, if they need you ... what do you do? I will never say no to my country, never will I say no to my country,” said Suarez in an interview with Uruguayan publication Diario Ovación.
Suarez is Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, with 69 goals in 143 games.
