World Cups are never won in the second group match, but they can certainly be lost there. That reality hung heavily over South Africa and Czechia as they met in Atlanta, the home of Coca-Cola, with both sides seeking a result that would keep their tournament alive.

Beneath the covered roof of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, temporarily stripped of its name to comply with FIFA’s sponsorship regulations, nerves were obvious from the outset. Barely a minute had elapsed when Patrik Schick found himself unmarked at the far post, but the Czech striker could only direct a tame header despite having the time and space to do much better.

South Africa looked strangely unsettled in the opening exchanges, and Czechia deservedly struck the fastest goal of the tournament. Michael Sadilek applied the finish after a long throw from the left caused confusion inside the box. Adam Hlozek chased down a loose ball on the right and fed it to the edge of the area, where Sadilek exchanged quick passes with Filip Sojka before calmly sliding his effort beyond Ronwen Williams.

It was another early setback for Bafana Bafana, who had also fallen behind in the opening stages of their defeat to Mexico. Having entered the match knowing anything less than victory would extinguish their World Cup hopes, they now faced an immediate test of character.

South Africa’s first meaningful response arrived in the 12th minute when Oswin Appollis tried his luck from distance, his effort taking a deflection for a corner. Thereafter, the Africans gradually wrested control of possession and began pushing Czechia deeper, but the all-important goal eluded them despite their efforts.

Their best opportunity arrived in first-half stoppage time. A floated ball into the area went through the grasp of goalkeeper Matej Kovar, but Maseko’s instinctive effort on the turn was blocked by Ladislav Krejci.

The pattern continued after the break. Schick again failed to make the most of a free header early in the second half, wasting an opportunity to extend Czechia’s advantage. But as the game stretched, the contest became increasingly open, with the cool conditions beneath the stadium roof allowing both sides to maintain a high tempo.

The breakthrough finally arrived when South Africa was awarded a penalty by American referee Tori Penso, the second woman to officiate in a men’s World Cup match, after Pavel Sulc was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area. Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly sent Kovar the wrong way, restoring parity and breathing renewed life into Bafana Bafana’s fading World Cup hopes.

Both sides sensed an opportunity and pushed for a winner, but urgency failed to compensate for a lack of precision in the final third. The draw solved little, but it ensured that neither South Africa nor Czechia left Atlanta with its World Cup dreams shattered.
