India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty ended a two-year title wait after they beat Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the men’s doubles final of the BWF Super 750 tournament in Singapore on Sunday.
The Indian duo fought back from a game down to clinch their first Singapore title with a 18-21, 21-17, 21-16 result.
“It was very intense. I think we knew when we got onto the court that it would be a cracker of a game and that it will go on till the very end. I think for the audience, especially, it was a very good game and for us as well. ” said Chirag after the final.
“Two years. We knew for a fact that eventually the win would come. We had that belief and it was just a matter of time and finally we got it,” added Chirag.
Satwik suggested that they gained the upper hand in the second half of the match, with a few vital moments going in their favour.

“I felt they were under pressure when we were chasing. When we were playing, it was pretty much simple. But I think in the third game again, it’s always 50-50. 11-12, 13-11. I think a few net cords here and there helped us. Today is our day. So happy with that,” said Satwik.
Satwik also highlighted that the emphasis in the final was on controlling the early phase of rallies.
“With the Indonesians or Malaysians, it’s mainly about the first four shots. They are very good with those shots. If they put us under pressure, they always end up on top. So you must focus on the first three and not focus on the front court.”
Satwik has also produced a baby-themed celebration after the winning point. “Last week, my brother was blessed with a baby. So that was my celebration for her. It was dedicated to her and my family who has been supporting back home,” he explained.
