England defender Tino Livramento is set to miss the FIFA World Cup due to a calf injury. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah is set to take his place in the squad. It marks a nervy build-up to England’s World Cup campaign, with the side set to play its opening fixture against Croatia on June 17.
Livramento was a valuable asset on both sides of defence and would have been in contention for a tournament debut on Wednesday. Reece James, Djed Spence and Nico O’Reilly are the other full backs in Tuchel’s squad.
Chalobah has only been capped once by England, when he made his debut in a 1-3 friendly defeat against Senegal a year ago.
Livramento had a limited run in the Premier League for Newcastle United due to a spate of injuries, including two knee injuries which kept him out of the turf for two months. A hamstring issue followed in January that ruled him out of 15 matches. In April, a thigh injury forced him to miss the rest of the domestic season.
Livramento is headed back to Newcastle for his rehab.
