Australia began its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a stunning 2-0 win over Turkiye at the BC Place in Vancouver, Canada on Sunday.
Promising young forward Nestory Irankunda gave the Socceroos the lead in the first half after receiving a lobbed pass over the backline from Paul Okon-Engstler before calmly slotting it into the net.
Turkiye created chance after chance in the second half trying to remove the deficit but the Asian side landed a sucker punch in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe found the bottom right corner with his shot from the edge of the box.
Australia slots in behind USA at the top of Group D with three points and will next face the co-host on June 19. Turkiye will take on Paraguay later on the same day.
