Senegal will be looking to keep its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign alive when it takes on Norway in the Group F clash at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Monday.
The Lions of Teranga fell to a 1-3 defeat against France in their tournament opener, while Norway thumped Iraq 4-1.
The Norway vs Senegal FIFA World Cup Group I match will be officiated by Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio.
Sampaio came under the spotlight after taking charge of the tournament opener between Mexico and South Africa, a fiery contest in which he showed three red cards, the most in a World Cup match since 2006.
He began refereeing professionally in 2009 and quickly established himself as one of Brazil’s leading officials. In 2013, he was added to FIFA’s international referees’ list and has since officiated regularly in FIFA competitions and Brazil’s top flight.
The 44-year-old has also refereed matches in the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, Copa América, FIFA Club World Cup, and FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Sampaio first featured at a FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018 as a video assistant referee (VAR). At Qatar 2022, he officiated four matches, including the Round of 16 clash between the Netherlands and the United States and the quarterfinal between France and England.
