Curacao will look to continue making history in the FIFA World Cup as it takes on the Ivory Coast in its last group-stage match in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Curacao, after a 0-7 hammering to Germany in its tournament-opener, stunned Ecuador with a goalless draw, earning its first-ever point in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Ivory Coast, having beaten Ecuador in its first match, lost to the Germans, but remains in the race to qualify for the World Cup knockouts for the first time.

Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg will be the referee in Curacao vs Germany at FIFA World Cup 2026. This will be his second match in the tournament. He officiated in the Ghana vs Panama match in the first round of the group stage.

Nyberg became a professional referee in 2008 and has been refereeing in the Allsvenskan – Swedish top flight – since 2013. He became a full international referee for FIFA in 2016.

Nyberg was the referee at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup final between Uruguay and Italy in Argentina.

The Swedish referee has had his fair share of controversy during his refereeing career.

On April 9, 2024, in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between Bayern Munich and Arsenal, then Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel publicly criticised Nyberg for not awarding a penalty when Gabriel Magalhaes of Arsenal deliberately caught a ball with his hands during the course of play.

The Swede also officiated at the Paris Olympics and served as the fourth official in the 2023-24 Europa Conference League final between Olympiacos and Fiorentina.
