Top-seed Aryna Sabalenka suffered a shock exit at the 2026 French Open during the women’s singles quarterfinal on Wednesday.
The Belarusian lost in three sets to Russia’s Diana Shnaider who fought back from a set down to clinch the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
The 22-year-old, who has a powerful left-hand game and sports a signature headscarf powered through the final set without conceding a single game.
Shnaider had a breakthrough 2024 season where she became the youngest player to win WTA singles titles on all three courts (Hua Hin on hard court, Bad Homburg on grass, and Budapest and Hong Kong) since 2009, at just 20.
She also tasted success in the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning the women’s doubles silver alongside compatriot Mirra Andreeva.
She reached a career-high singles ranking of 11 in May 2025 and was seeded 25th at Roland Garros this season. This was her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal and will take on Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the final four.
