England, the reigning European champion, beat Ukraine convincingly at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with goals from Jess Carter, Georgia Stanway and Beth Mead.
However, despite the 3-0 win for the Lionesses, the question remains: has England earned direct qualification into the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027?
Not yet. England and Spain were drawn in the same group in the World Cup qualification. With the group topper directly qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Spain’s 6-1 victory over Iceland saw the World champion lead the group and enter the 2027 edition.
Yes. England finished second in its qualification group and qualified for the playoffs, which leaves the window open for its qualification for the tournament in Brazil next year.
“Mixed feelings, of course. To be honest, it’s very rare to get 15 points and not win the group. I think that shows our level, our consistency. We know that our performance against Spain wasn’t good enough,” England midfielder Georgia Stanway speaking to ITV Sport.
“And today we needed a reaction, and I think we got that. I think if anything, tonight we can be disappointed that we didn’t score more goals, and we created a lot of chances. We dominated the ball. We need to be more ruthless - 3-0 probably wasn’t enough.”
