Deepti Sharma registered a number of stunning records in India’s 64-run triumph over Pakistan in a Group A fixture of the Women’s T20 World Cup at Edgbaston on Sunday.
The 28-year-old veteran off spinner took five wickets giving away just 10 runs in an imperious spell that secured a massive win for the incumbent ODI world champion. These are the best bowling figures by an Indian and third-best overall in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
Deepti now also sits atop the wickets tally in T20 internationals with 166 wickets in 145 games. She overtook Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong who has 165 scalps from 105 games.
| Bowler | Wickets | Matches |
| Deepti Sharma (India) | 166 | 145 |
| Thipatcha Putthawong (Thailand) | 165 | 105 |
| Henriette Ishimwe (Rwanda) | 160 | 131 |
| Megan Schutt (Australia) | 152 | 125 |
| Onnicha Kamchomphu (Thailand) | 148 | 137 |
This is the third instance of a five-wicket haul taken by an Indian in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
| Bowler | Best figures, match details |
| Deepti Sharma | 5/10 vs PAK, Birmingham, 2026 |
| Renuka Singh Thakur | 5/15 vs ENG, Gqeberha, 2023 |
| Priyanka Roy | 5/16 vs PAK, Taunton, 2009 |
“I am very grateful. I like these kind of wickets, all credit goes to the team and I am very grateful, Hanuman Ji is great. I like ICC tournaments I think, from there I started, so I like it,” Deepti said.
“I think because it’s turning, I varied my pace in every ball and every over. That helped me a lot because it’s turning, so I just have belief that I have to bowl a little bit slower in the air and just believing in myself and bowling in the right areas. That’s what I was doing.”
Deepti’s fifer came after an underwhelming bilaterals run which triggered debate on whether she should make the playing XI regularly in India’s campaign.
“I was not worried about when I didn’t get wickets, but I always believe in myself that whenever the right time will come, I’ll step up for the team and that’s how I play and bowl.”
