Argentina has confirmed the top spot in Group J at the FIFA World Cup 2026 following Algeria’s win over Jordan on Monday.
Argentina has six points after two rounds, and none of the other three teams in the group can now finish above the South Americans. While one of Algeria or Austria can finish with six points, Argentina has the head-to-head advantage over both teams.
Earlier, Lionel Messi grabbed a brace as the defending champion beat Austria 2-0 on Monday to seal its spot in the knockouts. Argentina dispatched Algeria 3-0 in its opening game, once again thanks to a hat-trick from the 38-year-old.
It will take on debutant Jordan in its final group stage game on June 27.
As the Group J topper, Argentina will face the team which finishes second in Group H, comprising Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.
The match will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the city in which Messi currently plays his club football.
Argentina’s round of 32 match will be played on July 3 at 6:00 p.m. (3:30 a.m. IST on July 4).
