Paris Olympics semifinalist Lakshya Sen and teenage sensation Tanvi Sharma will headline India’s challenge at the US Open Super 300 badminton tournament, which begins on Tuesday.

Second seed and world No. 14 Sen opens his men’s singles campaign against Belgium’s Julien Carraggi and will be aiming to recover from an early exit at the Indonesia Open. Top seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei, whom Sen leads 5-4 in head-to-head meetings, is the favourite in the opposite half of the draw.

Former world championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth, seeded fifth, faces Chinese Taipei’s Liao Jhuo-Fu in the opening round. Saneeth Dayanand takes on Japan’s fourth seed Yudai Okimoto, while S. Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian begins against a qualifier.

India has seven players in the women’s singles draw, led by fifth seed Tanvi Sharma and sixth seed Devika Sihag.

The 17-year-old Tanvi, who reached the Australian Open Super 500 quarterfinals earlier this month, starts against Germany’s Yvonne Li. Devika, winner of the Thailand Masters and Azerbaijan International this season, opens against Peru’s Ines Lucia Castillo Salazar.

Anmol Kharb meets Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova, while Rakshitha Sree S faces a qualifier and could meet top seed Michelle Li in the second round. Shriyanshi Valishetty takes on Canada’s Rachel Chan, Tanya Hemanth faces Japan’s third seed Riko Gunji, and Aakarshi Kashyap plays Chinese Taipei’s Tung Ciou-Tong.

In women’s doubles, Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are India’s only representatives and begin against Spain’s Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez.

Seventh-seeded Dhruv Rawat and Maneesha K will represent India in mixed doubles against Indonesia’s Wirawan Ihsan Adam and Serena Kani.

India has no entries in the men’s doubles main draw.
