Spain got its first win of FIFA World Cup 2026 as it put the 0-0 draw against Cape Verde behind it and thrashed Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta on Sunday.
Its teenage sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring when he tapped a square pass into the net at the far post in the 10th minute, thus becoming the youngest scorer for his side at a World Cup.
Mikel Oyarzabal then struck twice inside three minutes to further push Saudi into a corner. Both finishes came from close-range.
Saudi attempted a few forays into the Spain half on counters but their attacks was smothered by Spain’s defence.
Taking off Oyarzabal and Yamal heading into the second half spelt Luis de la Fuente’s intent to see the game out.
Four minutes into the second-half, Marc Cucurella’s shot saved by the Saudi keeper, but deflected into the goal off a defender to cap off the win.
Ferran Torres too got a tap-in goal in second-half injury time but he failed to time his run and was adjudged offside.
