The FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F match between Tunisia and Japan at the Monterrey Stadium in Monterrey will be the 1000th match in the history of the quadrennial event.

The biggest tournament in global football kicked off in 1930 in Uruguay with just 13 participating teams. Both the USA vs Belgium and France vs Mexico started simultaneously during that edition.

Through the next 96 years, 84 different teams have had a taste of the tournament. The current edition of the event being held across USA, Mexico and Canada will see 48 participating teams for the first time.

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs has been appointed to officiate the landmark encounter. FIFA said that Kovacs will wear a special jersey, carrying golden detailing on the collar and sleeves, to mark the occasion.

“Playing a World Cup match is always an honour and a dream come true, but taking part in the 1,000th one is very special. It makes you appreciate all the history of this competition,” said Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri.
