Chennaiyin FC’s defence will be put to the test when it faces Punjab FC in the Indian Super League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.
While Punjab has looked solid this season, it was arguably outplayed by Sporting Club Delhi in the goalless draw last Saturday. With Chennaiyin languishing at 12th in the 14-team standings, the host will look to take advantage of the southern outfit’s struggles.
Chennaiyin goes into the fixture on the back of a 1-4 defeat to Jamshedpur FC. The former two-time champion has been plagued by inconsistency, securing just two wins and three draws in 10 matches.

An interesting subplot is the contrasting defensive records. While Punjab’s backline has conceded just eight goals, the joint-third-best in the competition in 2025/26, the visitor has let in 14 goals so far.
Punjab head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis emphasised the importance of execution and decision-making.
“The game depends on our performance, our concentration, and how we will execute our plans. We will not give the opposition the opportunity to create attacking patterns,” Dilmperis told the media.
Along with defensive stability, Punjab will also have to show more incisiveness in the attacking third. The onus will be on Nsungusi Effiong and Bede Osuji to provide that impetus.
