Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, India’s top women’s doubles pair, will not be participating at the upcoming Uber Cup Finals, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) announced on Friday.

The duo, No. 30 in the latest BWF Rankings, has been out of action since Treesa sustained a shoulder injury during the first round at last month’s Swiss Open. Treesa and Gayatri were ready to compete at the Badminton Asia Championships but unfortunately, the former got injured again.

“Treesa sadly twisted her ankle just 2-3 days before leaving for the Badminton Asia Championships. It was an accident during training -- she stepped on her partner’s foot,” India’s doubles coach B Sumeeth Reddy told PTI.

“She is resting now and will undergo rehabilitation. It is not a major injury, and she should recover in about four weeks. She will look to return at the Singapore Open at the end of May,” he added.

BAI has named Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam, the pair currently ranked 48th, as their replacements for the women’s competition set to be held in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24 to May 3. Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi form the other doubles pair.

The squad, led by double Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu, features in-form youngsters Unnati Hooda, Tanvi Sharma, Devika Sihag and Isharani Baruah as other options for singles. Additionally, the team also has Tanisha Crasto due to her experience across doubles formats.

The women’s side is in Group A with 16-time winner China, three-time runner-up Denmark and Ukraine.

India has two bronze medals in the Uber Cup - 2014 and 2016 - with a young Sindhu being a member of both squads.

Satwik-Chirag to train in Denmark ahead of Thomas Cup

Meanwhile, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who had played a pivotal role in India’s 2022 victory, will travel early to Denmark to train ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals.

“They want to train in Denmark for a few days before the tournament. They will be leaving tomorrow,” Sumeeth said.

Satwik and Chirag, ranked World No. 4, had pulled out from the Swiss Open quarterfinals in March due to a shoulder injury sustained by the former. They also skipped the Badminton Asia Championships.

The men’s team is grouped with defending champion China, Canada and Australia.
