France got off to a winning start at the FIFA World Cup 2026, beating Senegal 3-1 at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on Tuesday.
Skipper Kylian Mbappe broke the deadlock in the second half in the 66th minute, while substitute Bradley Barcola added another in the 82nd.
Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal in the fifth minute of added time, but Mbappe put the game to bed with a stunning goal from range to give France three points in the Group I game. The goal also made him the record-scorer for France in international football, going past Olivier Giroud with 58 goals.
Mbappe now has 14 goals in World Cups, taking him past Lionel Messi’s tally of 13. Mbappe is now two goals away from tying the record for most goals of 16 by Miroslav Klose.
