The goal’s significance was compounded after Messi botched up a penalty kick and fired it wide in the ninth minute, which had come Argentina’s way after Lautaro Martinez haad been fouled.
Messi had scored one goal in the 2006 edition, his first World Cup bow, before going goalless four years later in South Africa. He then added four goals in 2014, one in 2018 and seven in 2022 when Argentina clinched the title.
