Few teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have undergone a transformation as rapidly as Sweden’s. After A disastrous European qualifying campaign that saw the Blågult finish bottom of their group, World Cup qualification appeared impossible. However, a previous UEFA Nations League top-of-the-table finish offered Sweden a welcome lifeline by securing a World Cup playoff spot. With the appointment of the experienced Graham Potter, Sweden progressed through the playoffs to secure a World Cup berth.
Following Alexander Isak’s return from injury, and Gyokeres in red-hot form for Sweden in the playoffs, Potter faces a puzzle. He possesses one of Europe’s most feared strike partnerships, comprising nearly 200 million in transfer fees now at his disposal, capable of wreaking havoc on any defence in the World Cup. Now the question remains as to how Potter unlocks their combined potential without tactically disrupting their side and each other.
An overview of Sweden’s Deadly Duo
Gyokeres arrives fresh off a victorious campaign with Arsenal, having played an integral part in its Premier League triumph and Champions League final run. Following a move from Sporting CP in the summer, he recorded 21 goals across all competitions, but had to play second-fiddle when Mikel Arteta had a fit Kai Havertz at his disposal. Yet, for the national side, the 28-year-old has been an indispensable asset, notching up four goals in the playoffs, including the winning goal in the final, to secure Sweden’s path to North America.

Isak, meanwhile, had experienced an indifferent campaign with Liverpool. Upon making a British record transfer move for an exorbitant £125m from Tyneside to Merseyside, the forward has scored just four times across all competitions. For Sweden, the Liverpool striker has scored once since the beginning of the qualifiers, having been sidelined from the pivotal playoffs due to injury.
A Proven Blueprint?
With Sweden poised to begin its World Cup campaign against Tunisia, Potter must now decide how he would deploy his two talisman on the frontlines.
Since the start of Potter’s tenure, Tre Kronor have adopted a 3-4-3 formation, with Gyokeres leading the line. But with the return of Isak ahead of the World Cup, Potter has tweaked into a 3-5-2 to accomodate the Liverpool attacker, in its final friendly against Greece, which resulted in a 2-2 draw.
In the duo’s previous outing, Isak predominantly occupied a deeper position as an inventive “9.5”. Instead of operating entirely centrally, he occasionally drifted onto the left-hand side, positioning in the gap between the opponent’s midfield and defensive lines. His strike partner, meanwhile, functioned as a conventional “9”; luring defenders out of position and making runs goalwards to disrupt opposition defensive lines.
The prospect of playing both his prized assets has left Potter with a tactical conundrum within a compressed timeframe. But past learnings suggest that playing the two together may not yield the desired results. Former Sweden head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson played Gyokeres and Isak together in a similar system which results in losses to Switzerland and Kosovo, which eventually led to Tomasson’s dismissal.
Could a 4-4-2 Hold the Answer?
Though rarely manoeuvred by a Potter side, a shock 4-4-2 could be in the cards to refine the balance.
A system routinely used by the Norwegian set-up, which faces an identical striker dilemma to the Swedes. With Gyokeres occupying the target-man role, Isak could play as an inside forward, who is capable of cutting inside with either foot. This enables more movement along the right flank for the overlapping fullbacks to find the towering strikers in the middle and back post.
Whether Potter persists with his trusted 3-5-2 or explores a more adventurous 4-4-2, the end goal remains the same for Potter: to make the Blågult into genuine contenders on football’s grandest stage.
