Microsoft has restored access to the developer accounts of VeraCrypt and WireGuard after they were suspended, according to reports. The developers of the popular encryption and VPN software, respectively, were locked out of their Windows Hardware Program accounts, preventing them from issuing updates.
Account Suspensions Spark Developer Outcry
The developers of VeraCrypt and WireGuard recently reported that their accounts had been suspended by Microsoft without warning. This prevented them from signing their drivers, a necessary step for software to run on Windows. The suspensions sparked an outcry from the developer community, who criticized Microsoft for its lack of communication and transparency.
According to a report from the Dutch IT news website Security.NL, Microsoft’s actions were met with widespread criticism. The lack of access to their accounts meant that both VeraCrypt and WireGuard were unable to release new updates, potentially leaving users vulnerable to security risks.
Microsoft Cites New Verification Requirements
In response to the backlash, Microsoft Vice President of the Developer Community, Scott Hanselman, stated that the suspensions were related to a new account verification requirement for the Windows Hardware Program. He said that the company had announced the new policy in October, but it appears that the developers of VeraCrypt and WireGuard were not aware of it. Access Restored, Updates to Follow
Following the public outcry, both VeraCrypt and WireGuard developers have had their access restored. WireGuard developer Jason Donenfeld confirmed that he has regained access to his account and will be releasing a new update soon.
