The equipment soldiers carry is set to undergo a significant transformation over the next decade, blurring the lines between human and machine. In a recent podcast, three former servicemembers discussed how these frontline capabilities will evolve and what might constrain their development.

Next-Generation Gear

Future soldier loadouts are expected to integrate advanced technologies that enhance performance in combat, missions, safety, and health. These systems are designed to provide soldiers with improved situational awareness and decision-making capabilities. The development of this next-generation gear is a major focus for military planners, who are looking for ways to give soldiers an edge on the battlefield. The ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe has highlighted the importance of technological superiority, with both sides leveraging advanced systems. For example, recent reports have shown how drone strikes are straining air defenses, a clear indicator of the evolving nature of warfare.

The Integrated Visual Augmentation System

One of the key technologies being tested is the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS). This system was recently part of Project Convergence 2022, where soldiers from the 82nd Airborne’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team trained with the device. According to the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), IVAS is designed to integrate command and control capabilities, enhancing the effectiveness of soldiers in multi-national partner operations. The system represents a significant step forward in the integration of digital technology into the modern soldier’s kit.

Challenges and Constraints

While the potential of these new technologies is vast, there are also significant challenges and constraints to their widespread adoption. These include issues of cost, complexity, and the need for extensive training. Additionally, ensuring the security of these systems is a major concern, as they could become targets for cyberattacks. The importance of secure communication and data links cannot be overstated, especially when considering how cyberwarfare targets crisis messaging systems to disrupt coordination and spread disinformation.
