The announcement of a fresh $13 billion investment by the e-commerce giant on top of its earlier declaration $35 billion investment by 2030 has revamped India’s image as a a destination beyond scale and cost efficiency.

Latest investment towards India’s digital infrastructure by Amazon highlights how the global perception towards the country has shifted from “a back office” to the “host of the global AI stack,” experts told businessline.

The announcement of a fresh $13 billion investment by the e-commerce giant on top of its earlier declaration $35 billion investment by 2030 has revamped India’s image as a a destination beyond scale and cost efficiency. As companies companies look to Indai to build products, develop AI capabilities and drive innovation, HR solutions companies like CIEL HR said the developments will create demand for highly skilled talent in areas such as AI, cloud, data engineering, cybersecurity and digital infrastructure.

“When a global technology leader strengthens its presence in India, it boosts confidence across the ecosystem. More GCCs and multinational companies are likely to expand their engineering and innovation teams here because the talent, digital infrastructure and business environment are already in place,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra - MD and CEO of CIEL HR.

Global AI stack

Similarly, Sarbojit Mallick, co-founder, Instahyre, said the investment shows how the global AI stack is increasingly being built from India.

“I don’t think global companies are investing billions in India because it’s cheap, they’re investing because they can’t afford NOT to, right? It’s common knowledge that India now contributes one of the world’s largest pools of software developers, hosts over 1,800 GCCs, and its digital economy is projected to contribute nearly one-fifth of GDP by 2030. Leaders I know are deciding how much of their AI and product roadmap should be built here,” said Mallick.

Despite this, he added that the bulk of the esstimated 1.2–1.8 lakh jobs created over the next four to five years will not carry an Amazon badge but come from GCCs, cloud partners, IT services, semiconductor and data centre ecosystems, and AI start-ups that scale on top of this infrastructure. “Every rupee invested in digital infrastructure tends to create a much larger multiplier effect across the ecosystem than within the investor itself,” said Mallick.
