In a bid to emerge as a major data centre hub, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government is working on a plan to develop eight data centre parks across the State, a senior official has said, adding that the initiative is expected to attract an investment of around ₹2 lakh crore and generate over 50,000 direct jobs.
According to the UP government plan, the major locations identified for these parks include Noida, Greater Noida, Yamuna Expressway region (around Jewar), Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Agra.
“Land identification and allocation has progressed considerably in Noida, Greater Noida and the Yamuna Expressway region, with land already allotted to some companies,” the official said.
Several top national and international companies, including HCLTech, Adani Group, NTT Data, Yotta Infrastructure, Sterlite Technologies, Sify Technologies and Panasonic, have shown interest in the sector, he informed.
In Ghaziabad and Lucknow, the process of land marking is in the final stage, while in Kanpur, Varanasi and Agra, the identification of potential locations and preparation of master plans are underway, he said, adding that the government is ensuring these locations are connected with high-speed connectivity, robust power supply and better logistics.
“Proposals for investment of around ₹2 lakh crore have been received. Memorandum of understandings (MoUs) and initial investment agreements have already been signed for a large portion of this. Some projects in the Noida and Greater Noida region have even reached the construction stage,” the official added.
Data centre policy
In January, the UP government set a target to establish modern data centre parks with a total capacity of 900 megawatts (MW). This initiative falls under the State’s Data Centre Policy, first introduced in January 2021, to promote private investment and strengthen the digital ecosystem.
Under the revised Data Centre Policy, the State is offering incentives such as capital subsidy, exemptions in electricity charges, stamp duty relief, priority in land allocation and a single-window clearance system.
Additionally, the use of renewable energy is being promoted to align data centre operations with green energy goals. Data centres are power-intensive infrastructure, and the UP government’s energy strategy includes establishing new substations, strengthening transmission lines, and ensuring dedicated power supply to the parks.
