Vodafone-Idea records fourth consecutive month for wirele...

Vodafone-Idea (Vi) has recorded fourth consecutive month of net wireless subscriber additions with 1.21 lakh customers in May, the latest monthly data shared by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), said on Thursday.

Amongst the three private players, Bharti Airtel added the highest with 2,926,907 subscribers during the month, followed by Reliance Jio with 2,154,468 net subscriber additions in May, followed by Vi at 1,21,289 customers during the month, the TRAI data indicated.

Earlier, Vi reported net additions of 53,257 in April, 1,02,899 in March, and 21,927 in February. Over the last four months (February-May), Vi has added a cumulative 2,99,372 net subscribers, reflecting sustained improvement in customer acquisition.

With this, the company’s total subscriber base now stands at 198,659,341.

The company reported net positive subscriber additions across eight telecom circles during May and the strongest-performing circles were UP-East, Delhi and Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the TRAI’s latest data highlighted that the total number of wireless connections in May increased to 129.44 crore from 128.89 crore in April. The total wireless connections comprised 114.58 crore consumer Sim, 13.11 crore M2M (machine-to-machine) Sim and 1.17 crore fixed wireless access connections.

Total wireless subscription in urban areas increased to 744.36 million in May, from 739.78 million in April and the subscription in rural areas also increased to 550.11 million from 549.18 million, during the same period.

“The wireless (mobile) tele-density in India increased from 89.09 per cent at the end of April 2026 to 89.39 per cent at the end of May 2026. The urban wireless (mobile) teledensity decreased from 141.85 per cent at the end of April 2026 to 142.50 per cent at the end of May 2026 and rural wireless (mobile) teledensity increased from 59.33 per cent to 59.40 per cent during the same period,” TRAI said.

Overall, the number of total telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,337.54 million at the end of April 2026 to 1,343.10 million at the end of May 2026, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.42 per cent, TRAI added.
