Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s 2026 Best Cinematography win for Sinners marked a historic first in one of the Academy’s most technically demanding and male-dominated fields. She became the first woman, and the first woman of colour to win in the category. Yet, nearly a century of data show women account for under 20 per cent of the nominations and it is concentrated in select categories such as costume design and makeup.
