Kalvakuntla Kavitha, daughter of K. Chandrasekhar Rao, president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former Chief Minister of Telangana, on Saturday launched a new political outfit — Telangana Rashtra Sena (TRS).
Announcing the formation of the party at a public meeting in Medchal near Hyderabad, Kavitha said the aspirations that had fuelled the Telangana movement remained unfulfilled even after the formation of the State. “The dream that drove the Telangana movement has not been realised even after the formation of the State. The BRS failed to understand the aspirations of the people of Telangana. The chariot of the Telangana movement lost its way under KCR’s leadership,” she said.
Kavitha, who was a key face of the BRS during its rule from 2014 to 2024, said she, too, was part of the political establishment that governed the State, and expressed regret over certain developments.
“I was also part of the family that ruled Telangana, and I feel ashamed about certain things,” she said, adding that KCR was now “a different man” and no longer in a position to address the people’s hardships.
Kavitha, an MLC and former MP, was suspended from the party in September last year for alleged anti-party activities. At the time, she had alleged that certain elements within the party had worked against her and ensured her expulsion.
Outlining her priorities, Kavitha said she would work towards ensuring the welfare of 3.5 crore people of Telangana “like a mother”.
The newly formed TRS Party would act as the main opposition to the Congress Government in the State outside the Assembly till the next elections, and would become the “ruling party” after the next elections, Kavitha said.
