Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday claimed that Amul sells the highest number of sugar-free chocolates in India, as the dairy cooperative sharpens its play in the fast-growing health-focused confectionery segment.
“The sugar-free version of Amul chocolate is the number one selling sugar-free chocolate in India. It is a big achievement,” Shah said while inaugurating a newly-built plant of Madhur Dairy in Gandhinagar. Shah, however, did not disclose any sales figures or market share data to substantiate the claim. Amul has steadily expanded its chocolate portfolio over the years and currently sells nearly 35 variants, including dark chocolates, milk chocolates, white chocolates, single-origin chocolates, wafer chocolates and filled bars. Its Amul Sugar Free Dark Chocolate is part of the dark chocolate range.
Madhur Dairy’s new milk processing facility is built at a cost of ₹128 crore on 15 acres in Dashela village of Gandhinagar district. The dairy is operated by the Gandhinagar District Cooperative Milk Union Ltd and is one of the 18 unions under Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that owns the brand Amul. The Madhur Dairy plant has the capacity to process 2.5 lakh litres of milk per day, which can later be expanded to 5 lakh litres per day, Shah said.
Highlighting the growth of the dairy cooperative, Shah said Madhur Dairy collected just 6,000 litres of milk per day when it started operations in 1971. In its initial phase, the dairy collected only 6,433 litres of milk per day, which has steadily grown over time to the present daily collection of 250,327 litres. “Today it has a ₹7 lakh turnover per annum,” he said.
