IT employee union NITES wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking an independent inquiry into the suicide of a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employee in Pune.

The 48-year-old employee allegedly died following workplace harassment and humiliation by two colleagues, as per a note left behind by the deceased. A criminal case has reportedly been registered against three accused in all, and an investigation is underway, the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) said.

When asked about the incident, TCS said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this extremely difficult time. The well-being of our employees is of utmost importance to us and we are extending all support to the bereaved family. We have also taken note of the allegations against the two employees and are ascertaining the facts. Complete cooperation is being extended to relevant authorities as they continue their investigation.”

Listing this as the second employee death connected with the Pune office since January, NITES asked the State government to constitute a High-Level Independent Inquiry Committee on the matter. Further, it asked the Labour Commissioner to conduct a special inquiry into workplace practices and employee support systems at TCS.

“Two such tragedies within the same corporate establishment have caused deep concern amongst IT employees across Maharashtra and raised serious questions about workplace culture, employee support systems and the effectiveness of grievance redressal mechanisms,” said Harpreet Singh Saluja, President, NITES.

Earlier, TCS faced considerable flak in the media due to multiple POSH complaints filed by employees at the Nashik office. Speaking at the annual general meeting, the TCS Chairman had said the matter is being investigated internally.
