The Government on Friday appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff, with the incumbent Chief, Admiral, Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, set to retire on May 31 after completing his tenure.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan, currently serving as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, will assume charge at a time when the Indian Navy is expanding its operational reach and enhancing maritime preparedness amid evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region.

An officer specialising in Communication and Electronic Warfare, Vice Admiral Swaminathan was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987. Over a distinguished naval career spanning nearly four decades, he has held several key operational, command and staff appointments across the force.

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare at Karanja and the United States Naval War College, the officer is regarded as one of the Navy’s most experienced operational commanders.

He assumed charge as the 34th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command on July 31, 2025. Prior to that, he served as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff at Naval Headquarters, where he was closely involved in force planning, personnel management and modernisation initiatives.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan has commanded several frontline warships during his career, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. Defence officials said his extensive sea command experience and strategic exposure were key factors behind his elevation to the Navy’s top post.

On promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Southern Naval Command in Kochi and later headed the Navy’s Work Up Organisation as Flag Officer Sea Training. He subsequently commanded the Western Fleet — often referred to as the “Sword Arm” of the Indian Navy — and later served as Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Adviser on Offshore Security and Defence to the Government.

As a Vice Admiral, he also held the appointments of Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, Controller of Personnel Services and Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters.

A recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, Vice Admiral Swaminathan holds degrees in science, telecommunications, defence studies and strategic studies, including a doctorate in International Studies from the University of Mumbai.

Officials said his appointment comes at a crucial juncture as the Navy continues to focus on indigenisation, carrier battle group capability and maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
