Authorities demolish a drug peddler’s property in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district as part of an ongoing crackdown

The Jammu and Kashmir administration’s decision to revoke Aadhaar, passports and driving licences of individuals involved in drug smuggling is beginning to positively influence operational practices among transporters and traders, as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle narcotics networks.

The measures, announced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha as part of a 100-day anti-drug campaign, are aimed at disrupting the operational and financial channels used in the illegal trade, while promoting a more accountable business environment.

On Wednesday, authorities in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district demolished an alleged drug peddler’s commercial property that had been acquired through proceeds from the illegal drug trade.

Authorities also revoked the driving licence of another alleged drug peddler in Tral village of the same district.

A national survey conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, through the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 2019 estimated that nearly one million people in Jammu and Kashmir are affected by substance use. The findings indicate that 108,000 males and 36,000 female consume cannabis, while opioid dependence is significantly higher, with approximately 534,000 men and 8,000 women affected. In addition, around 160,000 men and 8,000 women are reported to be using sedatives of various kinds.

Checks stepped up

While the crackdown targets those involved in drug trafficking, stakeholders in trade and transport sectors said it is encouraging greater diligence in day-to-day operations, particularly in logistics-dependent businesses.

“People are being more careful about consignments and clients,” said a Srinagar-based trader, who pointed to increased verification and checks. Industry bodies have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a step towards ensuring a safer and more transparent economic ecosystem.

“We reiterate our full support for all efforts aimed at creating a safe, lawful and business-friendly environment in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Qazi Tauseef, spokesperson of the Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA).

“We view this as a strong and decisive step towards curbing the growing drug menace, which poses a serious threat to society, particularly the youth. Such firm action sends a clear message of zero tolerance against illegal activities,” the spokesperson added.

At the same time, the body emphasised the importance of balanced implementation. “While enforcement must be robust, it should also be fair and well-regulated to ensure that genuine businesses are not subjected to unnecessary hardship. Clear guidelines and safeguards will be essential for smooth implementation.”
