The Union Cabinet approved a resolution on Wednesday endorsing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’ vision. Introduced during the Cabinet meeting, the resolution also honoured Modi as India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister.

The Cabinet praised PM Modi’s leadership across national security, inclusive growth, and social justice as he became India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister. The resolution congratulated him on surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s record of 4,398 days in office, expressing confidence that under his guidance, India will continue to thrive as a self-reliant, secure, and prosperous nation.

In a strong endorsement of the government’s political and developmental agenda, the Cabinet expressed its “full support” for Modi’s leadership in building a developed India by 2047 and lauded “his tireless dedication to public service”.

The resolution appreciated Modi’s efforts towards “inclusive growth and social justice” and praised his leadership in strengthening national security and protecting India‘s interests. The Cabinet also credited the Prime Minister with driving welfare programmes for the poor and empowering marginalised sections, noting that more than 25 crore people had overcome poverty during his tenure.

The resolution comes as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government completes 12 years in office under the leadership of Modi, who has become the longest-serving prime minister in nearly two years into its third consecutive term -- a feat achieved by a prime minister after six decades.

Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following the BJP’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections that year. He returned to power with a bigger mandate in 2019. He was sworn in for a third successive term on June 9, 2024, even as the BJP’s numbers in the Lok Sabha declined.

Policy decisions

The Cabinet resolution also highlighted a range of reforms and policy decisions undertaken during the last 12 years, including the abrogation of Article 370, implementation of GST, One Rank One Pension, new criminal laws and measures aimed at boosting manufacturing and self-reliance.

It further cited the government’s actions on national security, efforts to tackle Left-wing extremism, peace initiatives in the Northeast and India‘s growing global profile through platforms such as the G20.

The resolution commends landmarks such as the abrogation of Article 370, implementation of GST and OROP, the CAA law, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and the consolidation of labor codes. The document strongly emphasizes the elevation of national security, evidenced by strict actions against terrorism like surgical and cross-border air strikes, ‘Operation Sindoor’, and the suspension of the unjust Indus Water Treaty. Commendable strides are also noted in the eradication of Naxalism, the signing of permanent peace accords in the North-East, and the resolution of the border dispute with Bangladesh, an official statement said.
