US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit India in May as New Delhi and Washington seek to reset ties strained by US tariff policies.

“Secretary Rubio looks forward to visiting India next month,” US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said in a post on X. The post followed Rubio’s meeting with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Washington, where the two held talks focused on bilateral relations.

Gor’s post did not specify the date of the visit. India’s Ministry of External Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for further details. 

This would be Rubio’s first visit to India since assuming office. Other top US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, have visited India over the past year. The trip comes as US-India ties have regained momentum in recent months. It also coincides with warming relations between US President Donald Trump and Pakistan’s leadership. Islamabad is playing a key role in mediating peace talks between the US and Iran and will host negotiations on Saturday, with Vance leading the US delegation.

India and the US struck a trade deal in February that removed Washington’s high tariffs on Indian exports and set a roadmap for expanding bilateral trade, though both sides are still finalizing the pact.
