Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy has asked Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for an urgent inquiry into allegations of disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal worth nearly ₹1,600 crore from the Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL).

“Given the financial stress due to over ₹51,500 crore in outstanding dues from the Telangana government, any reported irregularities warrant a thorough investigation. I have called upon the Chief Minister to ensure a prompt inquiry, strengthen safeguards where necessary, and secure the smooth operation of SCCL and the welfare of its manpower,” the Coal Minister said on X.

The welfare of over 40,000 SCCL employees and their families, as well as the future of this prestigious institution, must remain a collective priority, he added. Reddy also shared the letter’s copy on X, which was written on June 10th.

In his communication to the Telangana Chief Minister, Mines Minister Kishan Reddy emphasised that the continued growth and financial stability of SCCL are of paramount importance.

“In this context, some recent media reports have alleged purported irregularities and unethical practices in SCCL which, if true. may be detrimental to the company’s interests. I wish to bring to your kind notice a news item published across various newspapers relating to the disappearance of 40 lakh tonnes of coal, worth ₹1,600 crore, resulting in significant financial loss to the company, Given SCCL’s current financial position due to unpaid dues exceeding ₹51,500 crore from the Telangana government, these allegations could further hamper the financial stability of SCCL,” the Union Minister said.

Such allegations, if not examined with alacrity and if not addressed promptly, may undermine SCCL’s financial position and impede its future growth and sustainability, he emphasised.

“I therefore urge that the facts in the matter may be ascertained and inquired into urgently to assess whether the alleged irregularities have an element of truth and also to see whether there are adequate safeguards, mechanisms and internal controls for effective functioning of SCCL,” Kishan Reddy added.

While undertaking such assessment, it may be prudent that consideration be given to use of technology-based monitoring tools and to put in place periodic review mechanisms to check weaknesses at an early stage and address them promptly, the Coal Minister opined.

Last week, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K T Rama Rao (KTR) sought an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the alleged disappearance of coal from Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL).

In his letter to G Kishan Reddy, KTR raised questions over the disappearance of coal in large quantities without any accountability.
