Mumbai’s monsoon preparedness faced its first test on Wednesday as continuous rain slowed down traffic and resulted in flight delays.

Overnight the city and suburban areas received 154-190 mm of rains, resulting in water logging at the Andheri and Malad subways. Water logging was also reported near Hindmata cinema in Dadar and Sion circle. Suburban trains on the harbour, central and western lines are running late by 15-20 minutes.

An orange alert was issued by the Indian Meteorological Department on Wednesday morning, with a forecast for moderate to intense spells of rain in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg districts of the state.

In an X post, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said it’s emergency machinery is operating at full capacity with 7,000 employees deployed at various locations.

“The de-watering pumps, storm water pumping stations and flood control systems established by the municipal corporation have been activated. As a result accumulated water is being drained swiftly and traffic is proceeding smoothly,” it said.
