The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) has demanded a United Nations investigation and $ 5 million compensation to the families of Indian seafarers killed in the US attack on commercial vessels in Persian Gulf last week.

While three seafarers died following a US strike on tanker MT Settebello, an officer died on a vessel MT Celestial due to lack of timely medical support caused by the blockade.

In a letter to UN secretary general Antonio Guterres on Tuesday, the union said the deaths occurred in the course of legitimate commercial maritime operations. The families of these seafarers are devastated and are facing severe financial and emotional hardship.

FSUI General Secretary Manoj Yadav said the UN should immediately investigate the incidents involving attacks on commercial vessels and demanded compensation of $ 5 million be provided to families of the deceased. He added that international mechanisms for protection of protection of seafarers in conflict zones must be strengthened
