The Indian Army has selected the Israeli defence company Meprolight’s MEPRO X6 telescopic sight as the dedicated daytime optic for its in-service NEGEV light machine guns, which will be manufactured locally under a partnership with India’s RRP Defence.

Selected after extensive operational evaluations and environmental testing, the MEPRO X6 delivers enhanced target identification and engagement capabilities at extended ranges for one of the world’s largest military forces, the Israeli company said in a statement.

State-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which secured the tender with a solution based on the MEPRO X6, will supply products sourced from RRP Defence to the Army.

The Army’s overall evaluation process was focused on reliability, durability, accuracy and ease of operation under demanding conditions.

Supporting local manufacturer

To support local manufacturing and the Make in India initiative, Meprolight has signed a comprehensive Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with RRP Defence, under which the company will transfer the knowledge, processes and manufacturing capabilities required for full production of the MEPRO X6 in India, the company said.

RRP Defence is awaiting the signing of a contract from BEL to begin manufacturing telescopic sights for NEGEV 7.62x51mm light machine guns. Since 2020, the Indian Army has contracted 57,479 NEGEVs, with 16,479 of them directly coming from the original manufacturer, Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), while the remaining 41,000 units for the infantry will be sourced through PLR Systems—a joint venture between the Adani Group and IWI.

“The future of military capability will be defined not only by platforms and weapons, but by the quality of the information available to the soldier at the moment of decision. At Meprolight, our mission is to provide optical solutions that transform battlefield awareness into battlefield advantage,” said Meprolight Senior Vice President Golan Kalimi.

“The selection of the MEPRO X6 by the Indian Army is a significant milestone, and through our technology transfer partnership, we are proud to contribute not only advanced capability but also to the long-term growth of India’s defence and manufacturing ecosystem,” he added

Every rifle is expected to have the day sighting mounts, which will be cost-effective as well.

The MEPRO X6, as per the firm, is a fixed 6x magnification telescopic sight designed for assault rifles, light machine guns and other weapon systems that require a combination of precision, ruggedness and high optical performance. The sight provides enhanced target identification and acquisition capabilities, a wide field of view and dependable performance under demanding environmental and operational conditions.

Telescopic sights for night vision are separate from daytime optics for weapons. RRP Defence, which already has a partnership with Meprolight and has established assembly lines for the production of conventional electro-optic series of weapon sights, including ‘Red Dot’ for the Indian Army and ‘Mepro Mor’ for the Indian Coast Guard, will roll out the manufacturing of the MEPRO X6 at its Navi Mumbai facility.
