The Government of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday announced plans to build power infrastructure worth ₹15,032 crore to meet the state’s increasing power demand. It has also planned tto recruit 15,058 Electricity Personnel
According to a notification from the Tamil Nadu Department of Information and Public Relations(DIPR), the decision was taken after a review meeting on the State’s power situation under the chairmanship of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. The meeting included a detailed assessment regarding electricity demand, power generation and distribution in the state alongside.
The release added that in order to provide a permanent solution to power outages in parts of Chennai and other urban areas the government has decided to implement projects worth approximately ₹2,275 to upgrade the city’s power distribution infrastructure.
Across the State, 121 new and upgraded substations are currently being established at a cost of ₹10,109 crore. In addition, plans have been made to construct 231 new substations at an estimated cost of ₹15,032 crore.
To further improve electricity distribution services, the government has also deployed 77 new Fuse-Off Call (power fault response) centres, 7 additional power repair teams, 125 power repair vehicles, 10 high-level monitoring teams and 2 underground cable fault detection teams.
The government is also planning for future electricity demand by expanding renewable energy generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), new thermal power stations, and hydroelectric projects, the release added.
