The prolonged delay in naming the Chief Minister of Kerala following the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) electoral victory appears to have prompted the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key constituent of the alliance, to convene an emergency leadership meeting in Panakkad, Malappuram on Wednesday.

Senior IUML leaders, including top state functionaries and national representatives, are expected to participate in the meeting. Discussions are likely to focus on the prevailing political uncertainty, its adverse impact on party workers, and the possible implications for cabinet formation and the allocation of ministerial berths for the League.

While the IUML remains a major constituent of the Congress-led UDF, party leaders have warned that the delay in government formation is creating “uneasiness” and public concern. The leadership has reportedly conveyed its apprehensions to the Congress high command, cautioning that continued uncertainty could lead to dissatisfaction among party workers.

IUML leaders said they were finding it increasingly difficult to respond to questions from the public regarding the formation of the government and the announcement of the Chief Minister.

Technocrat M.P. Sukumaran Nair said the delay in naming a Chief Minister had created a governance deficit and mounting administrative pressure. Although the alliance secured 102 seats, the leadership vacuum following the May 4 election results has triggered visible unrest among coalition partners as well as the public, he said.

The absence of a designated leader had resulted in policy paralysis, stalling the implementation of the UDF’s proposed 100-day development programme, including the rollout of the five major guarantees announced by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “The anti-incumbency gains against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) could be eroded if the UDF appears incapable of providing decisive leadership at the very beginning of its term,” he said.

The Congress high command appeared to be handling the leadership issue in a manner similar to the compromise arrangements witnessed earlier in Karnataka and Rajasthan. However, he warned that the continuing delay was creating a governance deficit unprecedented in the State’s 70-year legislative history.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders sought to downplay the discontent expressed by the Muslim League over the delay in naming the Chief Minister.

Senior Congress leader M.M. Hassan said that those who voted for the UDF were naturally eager for the announcement and pointed out that such delays had occurred on previous occasions as well. Another senior leader, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, said the delay was not unusual and maintained that the process was nearing completion.
