The BJP government in West Bengal will introduce a comprehensive land policy and a new data policy to bring a visible change to the industrial environment within 100 days of taking office, State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said on Monday.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a Bharat Chamber of Commerce event, Bhattacharya said the Suvendu Adhikari-led government is considering incentives for industries, including a tax holiday, to make Bengal investment-friendly.

“There is an aspiration now that economic activities will be taking place in West Bengal. At this crucial point of time, we have to deliver something to you. You are free to do your business. There will be no obstruction, there will be no hindrance, there will be no extortion. We are going to formulate new laws for you to protect the business community,” Bhattacharya told business leaders attending the event.

BJP promises comprehensive land policy for investors

Criticising the erstwhile All India Trinamool Congress government’s restrictive stance on land acquisition, the BJP leader said the new government is working on a comprehensive land policy. Currently, if a company wants to set up a business in Bengal, it has to purchase land directly from farmers.

“Now, 82 per cent of the cultivated land is under small farms. The entire land is fragmented. It is not possible for any investor to come to the State and knock on every door of commerce. It is not possible unless the government has a comprehensive land policy. We are working on it,” he pointed out, adding that investors are ready and they are awaiting the new land policy.

Bhattacharya informed that many semiconductor companies have already contacted the new government to invest in the State.

“It has been less than a month since our Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari took oath. We have to wait for another three months. You will see a visible change within 100 days. It is our commitment. We will bring in a new data policy for new investors,” said the Member of Rajya Sabha.

BJP cites Centre-State coordination for Bengal growth

Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on May 9, marking the formation of the first BJP-led government in the State after the saffron party recorded a landslide victory in the Assembly elections held in April.

Last week, the State BJP president met Nirmala Sitharaman at her residence in New Delhi and discussed ways to boost Bengal’s economy and industry. “There is the federal structure, and now there is a double-engine government. Just two days ago, I met the Finance Minister. She said there are so many avenues to enjoy, there are so many fields where we can do something. Money is not a problem to run the State government,” Bhattacharya said, adding Sitharaman is interested in setting up a textile hub in the State.

The BJP leader further assured the industry captains that syndicate control, extortion, and political interference would have no place in West Bengal’s industrial ecosystem.
