The initiative focuses on real-world, AI-driven projects across areas such as renewable forecasting, cybersecurity and automation, with interns receiving hands-on experience and stipends of up to ₹25,000.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative to build a technology talent pipeline and fast-track grid modernisation, Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTransco) will recruit students from IITs and other leading institutions to work on real-world power transmission challenges.

It is launching a first-of-its-kind Summer Internship Programme 2026 as a problem-solving platform integrated into the State’s grid operations, with interns expected to work on implementation-oriented projects rather than conventional observational assignments.

Under the programme, interns will be assigned clearly defined problem statements, work under senior utility mentors, and develop deployment-ready solutions spanning artificial intelligence models and engineering frameworks.

APTransco has identified 44 problem statements across 10 functional wings, covering key areas such as grid planning, renewable energy forecasting, substation automation, cybersecurity, and financial analytics.

Outcome-driven approach with advanced technologies

Unlike traditional internship models, the initiative is outcome-driven, with participants expected to develop AI-based tools to improve solar and wind forecasting, build digital twins for grid operations, deploy drone- and computer vision-based systems for asset inspection, and design decision-support tools for real-time power procurement.

“The objective of the programme is to create outputs that can be directly deployed within the utility. Every project is linked to real-time data, field exposure, and operational use-cases,” APTransco said in a statement.

Initial intake of 30 interns, scope to expand

To begin with, 30 internships will be offered, with the number scaled up going forward, an official told BusinessLine.

``Power utilities are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and automation to manage growing renewable energy loads and to improve efficiencies in cutting transmission and distribution losses while enhancing safety,’’ he said.

Move towards data-centric grid and talent pipeline

APTransco’s latest initiative signals a shift towards a data-centric grid architecture, where machine learning, IoT and advanced modelling tools are becoming integral to transmission operations. In a way, it is also investing in building a long-term talent pipeline for the sector. Selected interns will receive a stipend of up to ₹25,000 a month.

Aims to build innovation ecosystem in power sector

The programme aims to build job-ready talent for the power sector, foster long-term research collaborations, and create innovation ecosystems around emerging grid technologies. Top-performing interns could also be considered for extended engagements, pilot projects, and future technology collaborations with the state power utilities.
