SC slams freebies culture, says states should open avenues for employment
The Supreme Court criticised the culture of distributing freebies, warning that indiscriminate benefits such as free electricity can strain revenue-deficit states and hamper economic development, while urging governments to focus on employment and targeted welfare.
The court issued notice to the Centre on Tamil Nadu’s plea challenging the Electricity Amendment Rules, 2024, even as it questioned policies that extend benefits without distinguishing between those who can afford to pay and those who cannot.
