Govt hikes import duty on gold, silver to 15% amid forex concerns
Let’s start with import duty changes on precious metals in India. The government has increased import duties on gold and silver from 6 per cent to 15 per cent, and platinum from 6.4 per cent to 15.4 per cent, to conserve foreign exchange and support macroeconomic stability amid global uncertainty and the West Asia crisis. It has also tightened the India-UAE concessional import route to curb arbitrage and rising gold imports via Dubai, while aiming to prioritise essential imports and reduce pressure on the current account deficit.
Govt approves ₹37,500-cr incentive to promote coal gasification projects
Next up, the Union Cabinet approved a ₹37,500-crore scheme to promote coal gasification, aiming to boost cleaner energy production and reduce import dependence. The plan targets 75 million tonnes of coal gasification, supporting fuels and chemicals like hydrogen, methanol, and fertilizers, while strengthening energy self-reliance and using domestic coal more efficiently.
Uber to set up first India data centre with Adani Group
In corporate and technology developments, Uber will set up its first data centre in India in partnership with the Adani Group, to test and deploy its technology as India becomes a key innovation hub. Adani Enterprises plans to invest over ₹5,000 crore in a 100 MW renewable-powered data centre, supporting MSMEs and creating around 600 jobs.
Air India suspends flights on six international routes as ATF prices bite
And finally, in aviation, Air India has suspended flights on six international routes and reduced frequencies across several global sectors from June to August 2026 due to high jet fuel prices, airspace restrictions, and geopolitical disruptions. The affected routes include Delhi–Chicago, Delhi–Shanghai, Chennai–Singapore, Mumbai–Dhaka, Delhi–Malé, Mumbai–New York (JFK), and Delhi–Newark, while the airline continues operating over 1,200 international flights monthly with adjusted schedules across key regions.
