India’s unemployment rate rose to 5 per cent in January from 4.8 per cent in December, driven mainly by a rural uptick, while urban areas remained stable and overall worker participation held broadly steady.
The rural jobless rate increased to 4.2 per cent and the urban rate to 7.0 per cent, with female participation at 35.1 per cent and the overall worker population ratio largely unchanged.

Anthropic opens Bengaluru office; announces partnerships in India
Anthropic has opened its first India office in Bengaluru, its second in Asia, expanded local hiring, and announced partnerships with firms including Air India, CRED, Cognizant, Razorpay and Swiggy to deepen its presence across sectors.
India is now its second-largest market, with nearly half of Claude usage focused on computer and mathematical tasks, as revenue has doubled since October 2025 and efforts continue to improve AI performance across 10 widely spoken Indian languages.

Torrent Power to acquire L&T’s Nabha Power for ₹6,889 crore
Torrent Power will acquire Nabha Power from Larsen & Toubro for an enterprise value of ₹6,889 crore, lifting its operational capacity from about 5 GW to 6.4 GW and expanding its thermal footprint in northern India.
The deal includes NPL’s 1,400 MW Rajpura coal plant in Punjab, with FY25 revenue of ₹4,866 crore and adjusted EBITDA of ₹1,153 crore, and is expected to close by June 30, 2026.

AMD takes on Nvidia in India with expanded Tata AI partnership
Advanced Micro Devices is partnering with Tata Consultancy Services to deploy its latest AI data centre technology in India, supporting up to 200 megawatts of capacity and challenging Nvidia in the fast-growing market.
The move forms part of AMD’s broader strategy to deliver end-to-end AI infrastructure, as India ranks third globally in AI competitiveness and TCS targets up to 1.2 gigawatts of data centre capacity.
