Agritech startup StarAgri on Thursday announced plans to expand operations across North East India as part of a broader strategy to build a strong, scalable presence in the region’s growing agricultural ecosystem. The expansion aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to tap emerging markets, both in India and internationally, with high potential for agri-value creation, StarAgri said in a statement.
Expansion to strengthen storage, jobs
As part of its expansion, StarAgri aims to partner with local warehouse owners to standardise and upgrade facilities for the scientific storage of regional commodities. The company will also expand its workforce through its current Guwahati branch office, hiring local youth for warehouse operations, Star Labs (quality testing), and administrative roles. A key objective is to reduce losses from wastage and pilferage while enhancing quality and quantity assurance. Farmers and traders will be supported through a “phygital” model integrating physical storage with online buying and selling via the agribazaar platform.
Amith Agarwal, Co-founder & CEO, StarAgri, said, “We are proud to deepen our operations and services across the North Eastern states, known as the ‘Seven Sisters,’ along with Sikkim. The continued efforts of the Central and State governments in strengthening infrastructure, particularly motorable roads, bridges, and railway services, create the right foundation for us to build scientific, efficient, and farmer-friendly agri-infrastructure that supports the region’s growth.”
Focus on warehouse upgrade, employment
Through this expansion, StarAgri aims to upgrade local warehouses on long-lease or managed models, strengthen quality-testing infrastructure, and create regional employment opportunities. By combining physical infrastructure with digital access to markets, the company aims to support local farmers, traders, and the wider agri-economy across North- East India.
The company is actively exploring partnering with warehouse owners in the North-East to bring them into the StarAgri network while upgrading them to the company’s SOP (standard operating procedures) for quality, security, and tech-driven assurance. It will also help the company service the needs of its corporate clients in the region.
Infrastructure boost aids agri movement
Over the past 15 years, the North East region has seen significant improvements in physical infrastructure, particularly motorable roads and railways. The development of national & state highways and rail connectivity across states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, along with Sikkim, India’s first fully organic state, has created new opportunities for efficient, rapid agricultural movement. This progress strengthens a region rich in diverse agri-climatic zones, producing rice, tea, fruits, spices, bamboo, and horticulture crops, alongside traditional Jhum cultivation systems, the company said.
