Kerala Agricultural University’s Agri Business Incubator (KAU-ABI) has organised a seminar on “Next-Gen Proteins: Bridging Science, Industry, and Careers”, focusing on emerging trends, innovations and entrepreneurial opportunities in the alternative protein and sustainable food sectors.

The programme brought together food technology students, faculty members, researchers, startups and industry experts from various institutions.

Surendra Gopal, Dean of the College of Agriculture, said while inaugurating the seminar that sustainable and science-driven innovations would play a key role in shaping the future of agriculture and food industries.

KP Sudheer, Professor and Head, KAU-ABI, highlighted the growing global relevance of plant-based proteins in ensuring nutritional security, reducing carbon footprints and promoting environmental sustainability.

He pointed out that several countries have already widely adopted plant-based and alternative protein products as part of sustainable dietary practices and climate-conscious food systems.

“India also needs to actively adopt and promote such innovations considering future food demand, nutritional requirements and environmental concerns,” he said, stressing the need for collaborative efforts among universities, startups, industries and policymakers to develop affordable and locally suitable protein alternatives.

During the programme, KAU-ABI also highlighted startup support opportunities under the PACE 2026 and RAISE 2026 schemes, which offer financial assistance for commercial ventures, innovative ideas and student innovations.
