Air India Express will start Navi Mumbai-Abu Dhabi flights from July 15, marking the launch of international service from Mumbai’s second airport.

Initially the route will have two weekly flights and service will increase to three weekly flights from July 29.

With the addition of this route, Air India Express will operate 30 weekly flights from Navi Mumbai, connecting the airport directly to Abu Dhabi, Bengaluru, and Delhi, the airline said in a statement on Sunday.

Navi Mumbai airport began operations last December. Currently it sees 149 daily flights connecting 46 destinations and handles around 20,000 passengers daily. Services are expected to increase to 300 per day in the winter schedule.

Along with passenger flights, Navi Mumbai airport plans to start freighter operations from July 15. Freighter operations are expected to ramp up to 18 per week, the airport’s chief executive officer BVJK Sharma said at an event on Thursday.
