The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Sanjay Kumar Jain, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), who stepped down citing personal reasons.

Jain will continue in the post until July 20. He joined IRCTC as CMD in February 2024 and has served the organisation for more than two years.

“During his tenure, the organisation was elevated from ‘Schedule B’ to ‘Schedule A’ and from ‘Mini Ratna-II’ to ‘Navratna’ status by the Government of India. This was made possible with the unwavering support of the Ministry of Railways,” officials said.

They added, “With the constant support of the Ministry of Railways, the company achieved its highest-ever financial performance in FY 2025–26, with revenue reaching ₹5,215 crore.”

Ministry officials said close coordination between the Railways and IRCTC contributed to significant growth in tourism revenue, with the company recording its highest-ever tourism revenue of ₹890 crore in 2025–26.

His tenure at the organisation witnessed several initiatives undertaken with the support of the Ministry of Railways, including proof-of-concept trials with reputed brands.

Other initiatives included the extensive use of artificial intelligence to improve public services, such as monitoring base kitchens through AI-enabled cameras integrated at a centralised location, and the introduction of online pre-booked meals through e-Pantry services in mail and express trains.

“Efforts were also made to make the e-ticket booking process more customer-centric through the adoption of better technologies,” officials said.

Before joining IRCTC, Jain had served in various positions, including Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Northern Railway; Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Division, Central Railway; and Joint Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises under the Ministry of Finance.

“Orders regarding additional charge of the post of CMD, IRCTC, will be issued by the Ministry of Railways in due course,” Ministry officials said.
